Course Description:
During this full day course participants will complete the following sessions:
Note-taking Session - We teach beyond the “what goes in my notes” and show you HOW to
actually lay it out using precise language! This course is suitable for suppression and Fire
Prevention Officers. You will review current best practices and standards surrounding notetaking and apply a simple formula to help learn HOW to document crucial information.
Inspectors will also review the importance of facts in issue and violation articulation. Many
participants adopt these strategies immediately and keep using them in the field!
By the end of this session you will be able to:
1. Describe requirements under procedure
2. Discuss reasons for making notes
3. Revise language to be precise
4. Apply templates + simply formula to create good notes
5. Articulate the connection between facts in issue and good notes
6. Discuss Consequences of poor notes
Court Preparation Session - Learn about your role within the court process and gain insight
into the overall court system. Connect the importance of good notes and documentation to a
successful prosecution. Let us give you strategies to calm your nerves, prepare for trial and
deal with questioning tactics on the stand.
By the end of this session you will be able to:
1. Articulate the courtroom roles
2. Discuss proper attire & demeanor
3. Articulate expectations of you as a witness
4. Describe questioning tactics
5. Articulate the importance of notes and evidence
6. Discover how to prepare for a court trial
Instructor: Angela McKenna
Angela was a police officer for 15 years with Waterloo Regional Police. She completed
assignments in the Detective Branch, Community Resources, Quality Assurance and
22 culminating in the Training Branch. Angela held designations as a Breath Technician, Certified Police Auditor, Designated Criminal Investigator, Use of Force Instructor, CEW instructor & Immediate Rapid Deployment Instructor and a Certified Coach for the Constable Selection System (Hiring system).
Angela spent almost half of her career in the Training Branch teaching officers about the
administrative side of police – proper paperwork, notebooks, investigations etc. She was solely
responsible for developing Waterloo’s training programs. Her largest portfolio included a
complete redesign of the Recruit Program for Waterloo and Supervision training.
Angela now owns her own business where she works with various clients to provide practical
learning solutions. Angela works with various Fire Departments delivering courtroom and
notebook training, case management and various other courses. Angela is an Adjunct Instructor at the Ontario Fire College – Courtroom Procedures Course and speaks at various specialized courses and conferences.
Angela also teaches at the post-secondary level with Conestoga College, Fanshawe College
and at the university level. Angela’s own education includes 2 BA’s – one in sociology and one
Education - Adult Learning.
